| Lorenc, Lady Pioneers Hammer Lady Bucs
Glendive --
It was a game which was decided before the fans could settle
into their new seats at the opening of the Dawson Community
College on-campus facility.
Thanks to a quick spurt early, the Miles Community
College women's basketball team made all of that fanfare not
settle too well on the nearly 1,200 in attendance.
Four Lady Pioneers, led by Region IX Player of the Year
candidate Aga Lorenc, scored in double figures as MCC won
going away, 80-41.
Roshon Nordlund scored 19 points, Carmen Fleming tossed
in 12 and Gosha Debicka added 11 points for the Lady
Pioneers, who jumped out to a 43-12 lead at the half, thanks
in part to a quick 18-5 start, and in part to a stifling
defense, which held the Lady Buccaneers to 21 percent
shooting for the game, and a mere 9.2 percent in the first
20 minutes of play.
The beat went on in the second 20 minutes, where nearly
every Lady Pioneer scored at least two points.
The news wasn't all good for MCC (5-1 Region IX North,
11-3 Mon-Dak, 22-7 overall), who learned that Sheridan
College had beaten Northwest College to claim the
sub-region's No. 1 seed. The Lady Pioneers will play their
next game against the same team they will face in the Region
IX Tournament on March 6 -- Casper. They will head to Lady
T-Bird land on Thursday night.
"It'll probably be a really vanilla game," said
head coach Dwight Gunnare about Thursday's trip to Casper.
"I'm sure (Casper head coach) Angelo (Hill) won't show
us anything he's planning on running, and we're certainly
not going to, either."
The Region IX Women's Basketball Tournament will be held
on March 6-9 on the campus of Otero Junior College in La
Junta, CO.
